Thinking About Joining


Checkers is home to runners of all levels-from elite cross country racers to those just getting started with the sport. At Checkers, there's always a place for you!

Some highlights included in your Checkers membership:

  • Weekly track practices Tuesday evenings between April and October. Track practices are run (no pun intended) by Vicki Mitchell, who coaches the U.B. track and cross country teams. Runners are separated into groups, so you run only with those of equal pace to yours. There are different workouts each week and they last about an hour.
  • Kids' track practices with Coach Roger Roll, which are scheduled at the same time as the adult track practices.
  • Participation in various USATF events and the Pete Glavin Cross Country Series each fall. (Checkers is the reigning PGXC Series champion!)
  • Discounts on entry fees for selected races.
  • Informal fun runs of various distances in and around Western New York throughout the year.
  • Summer picnic, awards banquet, holiday party, and happy hours.
  • Monthly newsletter containing interesting feature articles, member profiles, birthdays, event notices, a message from the club president, and more.
  • 20% discount at Runner's Roost in East Amherst and Orchard Park.

After you join, you'll receive a new member packet, which contains information about the club. You'll also begin receiving emails letting you know about various club activities.
