Thinking about Joining

Checkers is home to runners of all levels. To get a taste of it, you are welcome to come to a track practice any Tuesday evening between April and October.
Track practices are run (no pun intended) by Vicki Mitchell, who coaches the U.B. track and cross country teams.
She is an excellent coach and will help you with any aspect of your running.
There are about 125 runners at track on any given Tuesday. Runners are separated into groups, so you run only with those of equal pace to yours.
There are different workouts each week and they last about an hour.

You also might interested in what we call "splinter groups."
There are several of these groups scattered around Western New York and they do various distance runs once a week year 'round.
Beyond track practices and splinter groups, there is lots of bonding between members before and after races.
Checkers' runners (there are nearly 600 of us) are typically very happy to pass along successful training tips.

We have a summer picnic, awards banquet, and holiday party.
Members receive a monthly newsletter containing interesting feature articles, a listing of member PRs, birthdays, a message from the club president, party notices, and things like that.
You also get a 20% discount at Runners Roost in Orchard Park.

After you join, you'll receive a new member packet, which contains all kinds of information about the club.
You'll also begin receiving emails letting you know about various club activities.
