Ring-Road Relay—A Great Success

B Oct/Nov 2001

It was Don Mitchell who first discovered the format for this type of relay race while vacationing in Hawaii in 1979. It was a point-to-point 100K from sea coast, up over a 7,000' pass, and down the other side. His club, the Buffalo Philharmonic, staged the race in Delaware Park for the two years. It was set up as an all-comers event where teams were organized at registration. The intent was to balance the talent so that all the teams had an equal chance of winning. The first three runners on each team ran a total of 4 laps, and the anchor ran 5. The event was 17 laps, or approximately 30 miles.
In 1990 Greater Buffalo Track Club resurrected the concept while reducing the laps run by each runner to 2. It was held in mid-April. It lasted two years, growing to over 100 teams.

Last yearTom Donnelly and Brenda Litzinger brought it back once again. Their purpose was to develop a race that would raise awareness of the Messinger Woods organization. Messinger Woods is a not-for-profit corporation designed to achieve excellence in the field of Wildlife Rehabilitation, caring for sick, injured, and orphaned wildlife with the ultimate goal of release. The main goal is the reintroduction of "patients" back into the wild. The people at Messinger Woods are licensed, tested and trained to care for wild creatures.
Messinger Woods is dedicated to funding a hospital and treatment facility strictly for wildlife rehabilitation and establishing an educational center. All proceeds from the Ring-Road Relay race benefit the Messinger Wood's Building Fund.
Both Brenda and Tom felt the Ring-Road team format was one that offers an exciting alternative to standard road racing, while developing team competition as well. As Checkers members, they sought the support of the club which comes mostly from participation. This year's event drew 30 teams, 6 of which were exclusively Checkers members. An assortment of Checkers members also made up parts of other teams.
The response from participants have been overwhelmingly favorable. It is anticipated that the event will grow through word of mouth alone. The event offers spirited team competition, an excellent t-shirt design, lots of give-always in the competitor's bag and in random raffles, as well as an exciting post-race party.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Once again another season is winding down. As I glanced down at our Social Calendar, I noticed the last date is Turkey Trot.

The end of Daylight Savings Time will soon bring an end to our track sessions. But It doesn’t seem so sad to end the season this year. It was such a busy one, and since school started back up, people have been pressed for time. I’m trying to look to the future and the good times that are ahead. I’m looking to the start of a new season of XC, and the holidays are coming and that means there will be another season of indoor track soon. Sure I will miss summer track especially a night like tonight when there were clear blue skies, 70 degrees, AND lots of people all over the place! It’s been so pleasant. So many days this summer were so enjoyable.

We won’t be able to bike in the winter. Some of you who swim in the lake for workouts, won’t be able to do that either. We’ll be wearing a lot more layers when we go for runs or walks because the days will be cold and breezy once again. We’re not there yet, but remember when we’re in the midst of it, that a friend is always near to help you get through some of those miserable days. There will also be some beautiful fresh sunny winter days that we can look forward to.

The next ‘in-club’event will be The Checkers Autumn Gala, November 10th. We are hoping you will come and join other members and friends.

Your board members will continue to work hard during this fall to bring you the best running newsletter in this area. Please continue to send your items to Joan Crouse or to me if you choose.

Paul Wandel will find more people to interview, Tom Donnelly will continue giving us great graphic displays, and our treasurer, Jim Schaffastall, will keep crunching the numbers. Jeanne Chiarmonte will keep her eyes open on new tracks in the area for the club to use. Our new board member Mark Kucharski will have to put away the board he brings to track that has all the race forms. What will Bob, Becky and Tom Calcaterra do? Do you think they will miss driving an hour back and forth to take care of all of us? Do you think Bob will miss spending hours on our workout schedules? Maybe not for a few weeks!!! Time to take a break everyone!

Getting to Know You, by Paul Wandel

WARREN ELVERS

Age Group: 45-49

Occupation: Sr. Recreation Therapist, W. Seneca Psychiatric Center

Part Time: Massage Thera pist and World Class Duathlete

Affiliations: Checkers, Nickel City, Buffalo Tri and Buffalo Bicycling Clubs.

WARREN ELVERS - Multi Sport competition is nothing new to Warren Elvers. As a high school athlete, he participated in many team sports. But a football injury prompted him to explore cross-country running. "My first meet was devastating. After high school, I continued to run to stay in shape for baseball." From then on, Warren Elvers only got better.

"I entered my first Duathlon at the Don Carroll Batavia Race in 1985." To prove that you don’t slow down with age, Warren won that race 15 years later. Frequent participation and awards in the Southern Ontario Subaru Duathlon/ Triathlon series (placing in 25/ 28 annual events and leading the series age group ranking) have positioned him as one of the best in his class. "I made the World Duathlon Championships 4 times." After finishing 10th in the age group for the 2001 World long course in Holland on September 9, he muses about the future. "My goal is to stand on the winners’ podium at the Worlds in my age group top 3." In 2000, Warren was named All-American for the USA Triathlon and Inside Triathlon Series, and he may repeat the honors this year as well.

I was inquisitive about what is required to be competitive at a global level. "There are many components. Your diet and sufficient water consumption are major. I drink one gallon per day and get plenty of rest. Kevin McCinnin is my personal coach and we interact via Email and telephone. Coaching creates an outside perspective, which is significant. Another major component is drillwork."

Warren’s workout techniques are basic but effective. "I go with high intensity effort and interval training." Bicycle training is focused on a Copy Trainer. Warren interfaces his bike stand trainer with a PC and downloads his own personalized workout. "Improvement is a system."

Warren’s approach to training and improvement has paid off. "In competition, I run an average pace of 600 – 630 MPM and cycle an average pace of 25 MPH." A third-place, age-group finish at the PowerMan USA National qualifier in San Diego was the go-ahead for the Worlds. " The cobblestone streets of Holland and Italy were wet and general conditions were cold and rainy most of the time." The 15Km Run- 60Km Bike- 8Km run was completed in 3 Hr/ 14 Min. Five days later, competition for the short course event (10 Km- 40Km- 5Km) in Venice, Italy, yielded a 19th place age-group finish.

Locally, Warren directs the annual Nickel City Beaver Island Duathlon. Th event attracts almost 300 competitors from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Ohio and Ontario. "It’s my way to give back to the community."

What exactly motivates and inspires this middle-aged recreation therapist? " I like the aspect of competition. You are racing with people of different backgrounds and professions, yet share a common experience." Referencing to a long-term goal, "My ultimate goal is to compete in a race at 100 years old." He finalizes with, "Make a commitment to what you want to do and go do it."

Congratulations to Brett Richner who has been

selected by Chevrolet to be an Olympic Torchbearer.

NATIONAL DISTANCE RUNNING HALL OF FAME

I recently spent time at the NDRHF in Utica, and had to share the experience with everyone. It’s a wonderful and very motivating experience with films and biographical displays of America’s distance running innovators. It’s open M-F, 9-1 and 2-5,. I know it’s tough to get to with those hours, but if you’re going by Utica sometime be sure you pull off and take in the scene. You’ll be glad you made the trip! It’s just 1-mile off 90. Alan Wrobel

Best wishes to Heather Gilbert on her recent

engagement to

Joe Quarantillo.

Tri, Tri, Tri Again,

by Cindy Stankiewicz
Our season is winding down and we certainly had a lot of fun this 2001 triathlon season. Buffalo Triathlon Club membership has grown over the last couple years making travel and competition all the more fun. Our club members are people from all walks of life and a wide variety of training abilities. Several members are coaches, personal trainers, physical therapists and medical personnel that can help with teaching, training, and advising our athletes. Our next club meeting is being held at the Pearl Street Brewery October 10, 2001 starting at 7:30 pm. Pearl Street is talking about club sponsorship, and we will ordering our club jerseys in October, so now is the time to become a member! For more information about the club, membership, meeting dates, etc., you can check out our website http://buffalotriathlonclub.com or send your questions to info@buffalotriathlonclub.com

Upcoming adventuresGreat Floridian Triathlon October 20, 2001

This is an ironman distance event and BTC/Checkers club members registered to compete in this USAT National Championship are Bill Seyler, Tony Garrow, Jim Kavanaugh, Bob Giardini, and David Ireland. Wish these Ironmen good luck if you see them over the next couple weeks – they’re training pretty hard for this event!

Update on Barb Bittner. Barb got the boots removed a couple weeks ago and ditched her wheel chair – she’s making excellent progress! She’s walking around the house without the use of her crutches and has been in the pool using the Aqua Jogger BTC got for her. Barb expects to return to work on October 1st and hopes to begin driving again around October 10th. Barb will certainly be ready to walk down the aisle and marry Vaughn Mielcarek October 13, 2001. Barb sends her thanks to everyone and said she would not have made it this far without the love and support for all her fellow athletes and family.

LETTER….

Trying to recover from two herniated discs, even though painful, has been an eye-opener. Cheering you, taking photos, volunteering, or walking part of the course and exchanging "grandma stories" with Mary Roll, made me feel still part of the game.

Watching the Presque Isle Half Marathon this summer was quite impressive. Cheering others on, I had the opportunity to meet Mark Graham (a wheelchair competitor). After the race, he thanked me for the support. At one time, he ran road races. At the age of 25, he found himself at the Cleveland Clinic due to severe back, neck, and shoulder pain. He left there in a wheelchair due to a cancerous tumor on his spine. There weren't any speeches or fan-fare accepting his award. However, his performance and silence spoke volumes. Mark's goal is to take 15 minutes off his race time and qualify for Boston. Questioning whether this was attainable, he was quickly given support, encouragement, and advice by Fran Emmerling and Dave Peterson. Fran (who has lost count after 80 marathons) knew what courses could help him reach his goal.

Mark has been on a lot of recovery runs with me and probably always will. He is a man who has accepted his capabilities and limitations, still not afraid to be at that starting line regardless of the distance or outcome. If you know of any money races for wheelchair competitors, please let me know. The equipment to race is costly.

Thanks to all of you who sent a card, made a phone call, or gave words of encouragement. A special thanks to Warren Elvers whose talent, knowledge, and skill as a massage therapist led me to a quicker recovery. Bonnie Bathurst
